Anthropology 

Objectives of the M.S. Program in Applied Anthropology

Graduates of this program will have:

1.    An understanding of the variety of ways in which anthropology is being applied across the country and around the world today.

2.    An understanding of cultural heritage, what it is, why it should be preserved, and how it is being protected.

3.    An understanding of federal and state legislation, regulations and procedures pertaining to the preservation of cultural resources.

4.    A working knowledge of quantitative analysis and computer applications such as GIS (geographic information systems).

5.    The ability to prepare grant applications and professional reports, and give public presentations.

6.    The ability to design and conduct professional research projects, utilizing some of the following techniques:
       a.  Archaeological survey, testing, and excavation
       b.  Laboratory analysis of material culture
       c.  Analysis of human remains
       d.  Archival searches
       e.  Interviewing
       f.   Participant observation
       g.  Survey research

7.    Experience working in an agency or organization as an applied anthropologist.

8.    Consideration for the cultural sensitivity of diverse communities (Native American, African American, etc.) and the ability to develop and maintain a working relationship with clients.
